Old Fort Amsterdam

Since we have moved here we have been wanting to make a visit to the Old Fort Amsterdam.  It is on a piece of land between Little Bay and Great Bay near Philipsburg.  We finally made it there with Addie and Mike (he had blocks earlier in the week and was enjoying some down time). By the way this post would have been up days ago but I just switched over to a Mac and the iphoto program went nutso on me........so after dealing with all that - please enjoy all the photos.

the old hospital building

when you walk out to the point you can sit and watch all the ships and the waves - I nice little spot with a breeze.  It reminded us of California (can you spot Mike?)

checking out the large cruise ship at the port

cruise ship port - this is low season so there was only 1 ship visiting

Great Bay - this is the bay that Philipsburg the capital of St.Maarten is located on

enjoying the view of Philipsburg

after we walked around Fort Amsterdam we went down to Philipsburg and walked along the boardwalk and front street.  We happened upon the St.Maarten museum on a side street  - it was free and although it is small has a lot of interesting information and prints for sale.  We then came across the Star Wars place - the artist of the gallery worked on the Star Wars movies and now lives on the island and works as an artist.  A pretty interesting place......

The day was a success and we had a good time exploring some of the island we had not seen yet and we found the museum - we will definitely be going back.  Thanks Addie for sharing the day with us.
